College is a scary thing. It’s even scarier when you start out not knowing what to do and you’re walking around campus like a lost cause because you didn’t prepare for the next step ahead in life. I was lucky enough to be able to get into the College Bound Club (CBC). CBC is an organization that helps students succeed in high school and start a road to college. CBC was created to help students who are first in their family to attend college. People just can’t join CBC like any other club. You have to apply, be committed and work hard to stay in or you can be taken out of the program.
What I like about CBC is everyone has one thing in common; we all want to be the first in the family to go to college. Every Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, we have a study group where it is mandatory to go on those days at least twice a week. What we do, is that we go in and work on our homework. When I’m stuck on a homework problem and need help, I go ask one of my fellow members and ask for help and vice versa. Everyone works together to help one another reaching that goal of becoming the first to attend to college.
Once a month, we attend a Saturday meeting where we talk about ACT prep, talk to college students, go on college visits, and prepare for the transition into college. One of the Saturdays, I liked the most is when we got to talk to the college students and got to ask many questions about what college was like, get handy tips to survive college, and do’s and don’ts while in college.
CBC not only helps me with my studies and gets me prepared for college, they also help me communicate and interact with other CBC members. It helps me network and make many new friends who share the same go goal as I do. Now that I’m almost finished with high school my fellow seniors and I have to set good examples to our other CBC members and show them that we worked hard to achieve the grades and are prepared for college and won’t be scared when that transition comes. When they see how easy it was for me and everyone who took that first step to college who was in CBC they won’t be as scared as they were once it’s their turn like how I was. Now I’m ready to face that transition with my head held high.
